In Memoriam: Remembering Bill Gates Sr.

September 18, 2020

It is with heavy hearts that we bid farewell to Bill Gates, Sr., a former UW regent and public servant. Many Mary Gates Scholar alumni will remember Regent Gates, who was a frequent participant in the annual Mary Gates Scholars Welcome Reception, and often attended the Spring Celebration of Leadership and Public Service and the Undergraduate Research Symposium to chat with students about their learning. At the Welcome Reception, he shared memories of his first wife, Mary Maxwell Gates, and in his humble way gave students advice for living a life of meaning and fulfillment. He enjoyed meeting the students who carry on the legacy of Mary Gates through their contributions to the world. We are thinking of the entire Gates family as we say goodbye to a man who lived a full and generous life, and whose leadership and kindness inspired all of us to be better.
