Advising
Appointments are for advising on all aspects of the Mary Gates Scholarships for new or returning applicants, as well as for current scholars. We have reconfigured our appointments in an effort to equitably serve all students. Continue reading to make sure you are selecting the appointment type that is best for you.
Please read before scheduling an appointment: To get the most out of your meeting, please explore the resources on our website and take note of any more specific questions you may have. You are also encouraged to attend one of our scheduled info sessions before signing up for an advising session.
Click on the button below to schedule an advising appointment. Please only schedule one appointment at the time.
Step 1. Choose the appointment type that applies to you.
- First-time Applicant Advising Appointments (30 minutes) are for students who are working on a Mary Gates Research or Leadership application for the first time. We particularly encourage first-time applicants to attend an info session before signing up for an advising appointment.
- If you already applied for a Mary Gates Research Scholarship and are now applying for a Mary Gates Leadership Scholarship for the first time (or vice versa), this type of appointment is also for you.
- If you would like to review an essay draft: Please follow the instructions on the booking page and remember to email your draft to the advisor 24 hours in advance of your appointment.
- General Advising Appointments (30 minutes) are for new or returning applicants, as well as Mary Gates Scholars, who have questions on any aspect of the application process and/or want to get general feedback on a current essay draft.
- If you would like to review an essay draft: Please follow the instructions on the booking page and remember to email your draft to the advisor 24 hours in advance of your appointment.
- NOTE: Due to an increased demand for feedback, we cannot meet equitably through one-on-one appointments to review unawarded applications. We invite you to attend a workshop if you would like to get support in reworking your application for a future cycle. “Reworking your MG application” workshops will cover feedback applicable to the majority of applicants.
Step 2. Pick the modality for the meeting that works best for you, either in-person or online. Please note that on Fridays we only offer online appointments.
- In-person appointments are in Mary Gates Hall, Suite 171. You may check in at the front desk.
- Online appointments are over Zoom. You will find the link in the confirmation email you will receive after scheduling your appointment.
Weekly drop-in advising
Next drop-in advising session:
- Friday, April 4, 10am-12pm
In Autumn, Winter and Spring we offer weekly virtual drop-in advising on Fridays. Each student can speak to an advisor for 10 minutes to discuss any brief questions they may have about the application process. Please note that these appointments are not meant to discuss a current draft in progress, for which we encourage you to book an advising appointment.
Please use this Zoom link to join the drop-in hours: https://washington.zoom.us/j/95499386404
(Please note that you will need to log in with your UW account in order to be able to join the meeting).
