Research Project: Investigating Primary Care Providers’ Decision-Making Regarding Autism Referral
Project Description: Primary care providers are responsible for utilizing well-child-checkups to screen toddlers for autism spectrum disorder and immediately refer those with increased likelihood to diagnostic and intervention services. Participating in specialized intervention services at young ages is extremely impactful as it often allows children to develop integral social, cognitive, and language skills. However, only around 40% of children who screen at an increased likelihood are being referred by their providers. My project aims to investigate factors influencing primary care providers’ decision- making regarding autism referral. Specifically, the project will collect data on providers’ distribution of attention (information providers attend to during a visit) and evaluate the extent of their autism, referral, and intervention knowledge. Overall, we aim to understand what influences provider’s referral decisions to provide insight on the development of a future primary care provider intervention. We hope to support the increase of autism referral rates and ultimately improve the developmental prognosis for children with autism.
What have you learned throughout your research project?
This project allowed me to develop critical skills such as conducting literature reviews, using scientific writing, designing a poster presentation, developing a study design, etc. Not only did it teach me practical skills, but it also made me discover my confidence. Research used to intimidate me, but with this project I became sure of myself and of my ability to succeed.
What piece of advice do you have for future applicants?
I would advise incoming students to remain flexible, creative and to ask for help. When you are designing a project, challenges are inevitable and never ending. I can almost guarantee that just when you think you figured it all out- something will not go according to plan. Whilst that can be frustrating, it is important to remain optimistic and use creativity to solve problems and come up with inventive solutions. You will have to change your original designs, ideas, and plans- what a great opportunity to practice your flexibility and ingenuity skills! Lastly, do not be afraid to ask for help. This campus has so many resources – writing centers, professors (who are some of the top researchers in their fields), incredible TA’s – use them! To get the most out of this experience and make you project the best it can be utilize the support of this university.
