Research Project: Parenting in ADHD and Regulation of Emotion (PARE)

Project Description: The PARE study involves the use of questionnaires, electroencephalography (EEG), and observed parent-child interaction to better understand how parental ADHD affects parenting behaviors in children with ADHD. The goal is to identify measures of parental emotion regulation that are associated with positive parenting behaviors in laboratory-based dyadic interactions.

What have you learned throughout your research project?

This behavioral study aligns with my values of providing equitable care and contributing to positive familial relationships. For over a year, this research has allowed me to gain hands-on experience through in-person study visits with parents and their children, while contributing to research that affects over six million children in the United States (Danielson 2016). Working on the PARE study with Dr. Mattson provides me the opportunity to interact with families as I will in my long-term goal of practicing in a primary care setting. Serving as a research assistant on this study directly develops my expertise of one of the most common disorders which will allow me to excel in a field currently suffering from a lack of doctors.

What piece of advice do you have for future applicants?

Make sure to seek out feedback from people who aren’t knowledgeable about your field of research. Having people with a variety of perspectives read my essay provided me with so much valuable feedback.
