Mentors
Mary Gates scholarships are competitive awards available to enhance the educational experiences of UW undergraduates. As a mentor, you are an essential part of your student’s development and important to their success in the scholarship application process.
For more information about specific Mary Gates scholarships, use the links under Apply.
If you have been asked to be a mentor for a scholarship applicant, please visit the instructions page for more information.
If you are a current mentor of a Mary Gates Scholar, we will ask you to respond to one or two surveys regarding your student’s progress, as well as to get feedback on your experience with mentoring.
Mary Gates Scholars are required to present their work in a UW-sponsored public event (i.e., the Undergraduate Research Symposium or the Spring Celebration of Service and Leadership). Your student may look to you for additional guidance in how to prepare for these events. You also will be invited to attend and experience the presentations of these emerging leaders and professionals. Both events are festive and inspiring!
Lastly, THANK YOU. Your support propels the learning of our students and gives them the confidence to take risks in areas important to them.

become comfortable talking about my research and intellectual interests
in a manner that is both productive and rewarding.
