Anna Roche
Mary Gates Research Scholar, Autumn 2019
Project Description: The Mary Gates Scholarship funded my research in the UW Quantum Materials Lab. Here I grew and investigated the properties of strongly correlated materials and simulated the contribution of current jetting to observed negative magneto-resistance.
What have you learned throughout your research project?
Through my research experience, I learned important experimental techniques and gained knowledge in my field necessary for success in graduate school. I was lucky enough to quickly identify my passion for condensed matter physics through Professor Chu’s lab and have pursued this since. I learned that research is, at times, extremely difficult but always rewarding.
What piece of advice do you have for future applicants?
Do as much research as you can! You will gain countless valuable skills which will open doors to additional research opportunities like internships and REUs.
