Research Project: Genetic Dissection of Phaseolus vulgaris (common bean) Immunity Against Insect Herbivores

Project Description: I am developing a genetic line of common bean that lacks a key immune receptor called the inceptin receptor. Using a novel high-throughput caterpillar feeding assay, I will measure the defensive consequences of lacking the inceptin receptor.

What have you learned throughout your research project?

How to organize a long term plant breeding project and how to use molecular techniques to determine plant genotype. I have also learned how to work effectively with collaborators to benefit everyone on the team.

What piece of advice do you have for future applicants?

You will never win anything you don’t apply for!
