Research Project: IoT Security in the Built Environment
Project Description: The Communication, Technology, and Organizational Practices Lab addresses the privacy and organizational challenges created by Internet of Things (IoT) devices in the built environment. Our team studies how Information Technology (IT) staff and Operations & Maintenance (O&M) staff share knowledge and skills, as well as how public policy impacts IT and O&M collaboration.
What have you learned throughout your research project?
Working on cybersecurity research has greatly enriched my academic and professional interests, opening my eyes to the ethical, cultural, and privacy concerns of technology. The interdisciplinary nature of our team has taught me how to communicate across fields and engage with the intersectionality of international studies. I am incredibly grateful to learn from my mentors and coworkers everyday.
What piece of advice do you have for future applicants?
I would advise future applicants to have your essay reviewed by your mentor, a Mary Gates advisor, and a peer/friend. That way you have advice from people who know the project, know the application, and know you.
