Research Project: Evaluating the Effect of VWF:ADAMTS13 Ratio on Embolization and Thrombotic Risk Using a Microfluidic Device
Research Project Description: Using a microfluidic device to explore how the ratio between blood glycoprotein von Willebrand Factor (VWF) and its protease ADAMTS13 regulate hemostasis in platelets, thus gaining an insight into thrombosis and bleeding risk.
What have you learned throughout your research/leadership project and experience?
This research experience had taught me valuable hematology knowledge, laboratory, data analysis and technological skills. Being a part of this research, I learned greatly about how platelet are activated and function in a coagulation cascade, what regulates blood clotting activity, hematologic diseases and their treatment approaches. I also learned about microfluidic device fabrication and even got to improve the fabrication process, something new that I never knew about before going into this experience, and now I got interested in microfluidic devices! In additional, I also learned coding skills and image analysis, which help me develop tool for data analysis.
What advice do you have for future Mary Gates Research applicants?
