Research Project: ADHD Coaching Since the COVID-19 Pandemic: Is There a New Wave of ADHD Coaches?

Project Description: According to the ADHD Life Transition Model, individuals with ADHD receive little support despite increasing environmental demands as they transition to young adulthood. The increased demand for ADHD treatment over the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated this issue and opened the door to more individuals receiving support from ADHD coaches. We do not fully understand who these new ADHD coaches are and the scope of their practices. In response, we created the U.S. National ADHD Coaching Survey, the first attempt to collect detailed information about the rising field of ADHD coaching. My project examines ADHD coaching practices in the U.S. and differences in practices among ADHD coaches who began their practice prior to and following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. I aim to draw connections to evidence-based psychosocial treatment of ADHD, including organizational skills training and cognitive behavioral therapies, and highlight how coaching might impact the current landscape of ADHD treatment and services by analyzing differences in professional identity, training, referral networks, and session content.

What have you learned throughout your research project? This project has reinforced my interest in clinical psychology research, and ignited a particular passion for examining ADHD treatment efficacy. Seeing this project through from conceptualization to finish has taught me critical research skills spanning the research process, including survey development, data analysis, and scientific writing. It has also deepened my confidence in my ability to succeed in research and further motivated me to contribute to the field of ADHD treatment.

What piece of advice do you have for future applicants? Choose a project you genuinely care about, it will make the time and effort spent on it so much more fulfilling. Developing a strong understanding of your project’s background will also make it easier to communicate your dedication and passion to your project. Lastly, don’t hesitate to seek guidance from mentors and peers, they all bring valuable knowledge and are here to help!
