Research Project: The Extent and Nature of Cyberbullying Towards Transgender in Emerging Adulthood

Project Description: This mixed-methods research explores cyberbullying experiences among transgender and/or non-binary emerging adults (ages 18–25). Using a modified Cyberbullying Victimization Scale, the study surveys participants on verbal/written, visual/sexual, and social exclusion bullying across public and private online spaces. It collects demographic data, including gender identity, racial background, outness, and social media usage, to analyze patterns and correlations. Open-ended responses provide insight into personal experiences. By combining quantitative trends with qualitative narratives, the study aims to inform platform safety policies and improve support systems for transgender and/or non-binary individuals facing online harassment.

What have you learned throughout your research project?

Through this research, I’ve learned how deeply cyberbullying affects transgender and non-binary emerging adults—not just through statistics, but through the personal stories behind the data. I’ve gained a greater understanding of how identity, visibility, and social media use intersect to shape vulnerability to online harassment. Methodologically, I developed skills in survey design, mixed-methods analysis, and ethical research with marginalized communities. I also learned the importance of positionality, community involvement, and responsible interpretation when researching sensitive topics.

What piece of advice do you have for future applicants?

My advice is to start early and stay curious. Don’t be afraid if your project feels imperfect—what matters is your growth and passion. Attending the Undergraduate Research Symposium is a valuable part of the Mary Gates experience. You’ll have the chance to present your project, share your findings, and get feedback from other scholars and faculty. I highly recommend fully engaging with it—it’s one of the most rewarding parts of the program.
