  • Date: Monday
  • Time: 6:00 PM – 7:20 PM
  • Location: TBD
  • SLN: 14488
  • Facilitator: Qanani A. Kalil (qanani@uw.edu)

Seminar Description:

Newly arrived immigrant and refugee students are one of the most resilient learners in our education system. Despite fleeing their home country due to a plethora of reasons without the familiarity of language, support systems or societal norms they strive to be successful, both academically and holistically. This is the reality for nearly 17 million refugees around the world, including those in Seattle.

This seminar explores challenges and obstacles faced by immigrants and refugees as they settle in and navigate the U.S. education system.

Learning Goals

  • Develop a general knowledge of global immigrant and refugee situations and US refugee resettlement
  • Understand the challenges immigrant and refugee students and their families face in navigating the U.S. education systems
  • Be able to identify benefits & drawbacks to programs and initiatives that are meant to help students and their families
  • Walk away with strategies and practices that best support immigrant & refugee students and their families
  • Develop community engagement skills through service learning

For EDUC 401 seminars, the number of credits a student receives depends on the number of tutoring hours completed in addition to seminar attendance. Seminars are Credit/No Credit, and are I&S credits. Credit and tutoring requirements are as follows:

  • 1-3 credits*: 20 hours of tutoring over the quarter
  • 4 credits: 40 hours of tutoring over the quarter
  • 5 credits: 60 hours of tutoring over the quarter
  • 6 credits**: 80 hours of tutoring over the quarter

A student may opt to register for 1 or 2 credits if it means avoiding an additional registration fee. ** If a student would like to register for more than 6 credits, they should email riverways@uw.edu with the request.

Current EDUC 401 Students: Need to change the number of credits for your seminar? Riverways staff can help you do this for free. Please email riverways@uw.edu before Friday of Week 7.
