How many credits can I receive for an Inner Riverways Seminar?

The number of credits a student receives depends on the number of tutoring hours completed in addition to seminar attendance. Credit and tutoring requirements are as follows:

  • 3 credits: 2.5 hours tutoring/week (at least 20 hours tutoring/quarter)
  • 4 credits: 5 hours tutoring/week (at least 40 hours tutoring/quarter)

  • 6 credits: 10 hours tutoring/week (at least 80 hours tutoring/quarter)

*A Student may opt to register for 1 or 2 credits if it means avoiding an additional registration fee.

** Students can only enroll for a max of 6 credits total per Quarter when tutoring for the Riverways Project. Need more Credits still? Email riverways@uw.edu and we will do our best to accommodate you

If you need to make up tutoring hours for a circumstance out of your control (school closure, holiday) you can complete an online assignment. Each assignment is worth two tutoring hours.

Where will I tutor?

After attending an orientation, students will be able to browse for volunteer sites on Expo. Students should then contact the volunteer coordinator of the site as soon as possible. It usually takes the contact person anywhere from a couple days to one week to respond and place you in a classroom.

What is expected of Riverways tutors?

Tutors are expected to commit at least 2 – 3 hours a week at the school sites they signed up for. The Riverways project provides tutors an opportunity to gain professional development, experience and participate in career exploration, therefore tutors should maintain a high level of professionalism when interacting with students and other staff members.

What kind of training do Riverways tutors receive?

All Riverways tutors attend a 1.5 hour orientation that covers topics including the role of tutors, tutoring tips and strategies, cultural competency, safety and liability issues, and how to get started tutoring. Students can also choose to take weekly seminar times where they debrief their tutoring experiences and discuss pertinent education issues.
